You Become like what you behold
You become like what you behold! Statistically, they say “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”
This idea isn’t a scientific law, but rather a principle that says the people closest to you will influence….
Your mindset
Your habits
Your standards
Your beliefs
Your ambition
There’s also a concept that says, “show me your friends, and ill show you your future.”
The bible says it like this….
“Bad company corrupts good character” (1Cor 15:33)
The truth is, whether you want to admit it or not, your environment is always influencing you. There are people today that get paid to influence you. They are actually called, “influencers!”
And none of us are immune. Have you ever been watching late night TV and that Taco Bell taco suddenly seems irresistible? Or,
“Why yes, I do think I need that copper bracelet for my joint pain.”
Everywhere we look, it seems like someone is always trying to sell us something. Our attention has become a hot commodity.
I read an article the other day that said people are developing a condition called, “Popcorn Brain” - It was explaining that studies are showing that more and more people are losing the ability to concentrate on a task, no matter how simple, for more than a few minutes at a time.
If we as humans stay on this path, what will this look like in 10 years? I shutter to think.
The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans,
“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know Gods will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
Every time I read this verse, one thing always stands out to me:
True transformation begins in your thoughts!
If you want your life to change, your thinking has to change first. Just because something is popular and trendy, doesn’t mean that it is good for us. The world and this culture typically do not have our best interest in mind. We are just a means to an end. Gods ways and the ways of the Kingdom are often counter culture. Love my enemies….WHAT!!?
Do not be conformed to this world! A new life starts with a new mindset. Before your habits can change, your heart has to. Before your actions can change, your perspective has to. And before your perspective can change, you have to take inventory on where your perspective is coming from. What are you “fixing” your eyes on? Who has access to your ears the most?
If our thoughts, and then eventually our actions, are swayed by what we are around the most, by what we consume the most, then that seems like something really important to pay attention to. If you don’t like the direction your life is heading, change the company and the thoughts that are taking you there.
I heard someone say recently, “all the wrong things that we wanna do come really easily…”
eat that junk, tell that lie, skip the gym and doom scroll instead, tell off that co worker, they deserve it!…Easy Peasy!! No resistance there. But Its in doing the right things that we struggle, feel the most resistance, and spend a lot of time questioning!”
That’s because our minds are trained to take the path of least resistance. But Good News….
In us lies the power to change!(I’m talking about The same spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in you and If God is for you who can be against you kinda thinking!
It just takes practice.
Bottom line, You CAN turn your life around by changing the way you think. Not because there’s magic in positive thoughts or manifesting! (We said goodbye to “Name it and claim it” in the 1900’s) But right thoughts lead to right actions. And right actions done over time create the change you wanna see. Again with some wisdom from the Bible,….You really do reap what you sew! So lets be intentional about what kind of seeds we’re planting.
Want to grow spiritually? Wanna get out of debt? Get a better job? Have deeper, more meaningful relationships……Its all possible. It’s simple, but not easy. But it’s worth it!
The last half of Romans 12 says -
Then you will learn to know Gods will for you….
Hear me,
There is no way you can ever go wrong with God directing your life! He is much better at it than we will ever be.
Changed thinking changes doing.
Changed doing changes living
